Teaching fourth grade is not all it's cracked up to be, and not really my cup of tea. But sometimes, you get a good day. Like today.
Because of this swimming thing, our schedule's been bonkers. It's basically a field trip in the middle of the day. At around 9:30 this morning, I may or may not have used the phrase "if you ask me about the bus seating chart one more time I am never speaking to you again." But you can't prove anything. The one good thing is that they switched things around to give me a break from the kids for thirty minutes in the morning.
The downside which is actually the upside is that I don't get lunch by myself, and the kids don't get recess. So, we get back from swimming and go straight to the room, and eat our lunch there, while the other fourth graders are at recess. Which means I get to eat with my kids. And we all sit on the floor and watch a movie. One of my favorite movies. That they love too. And we all laugh together, and they laugh at me 'jiving' around the room and we all laugh together at the same parts, and it's magical.
And THEN, it just gets better. Because now that I am in fourth grade, I can read different books to them, like my favoritest book in all the land. And even funnier, they get so excited about finding out what book is next. They've been asking me nonstop since yesterday when we finished The Tale of Despereaux which book we'd read next. That kind of question I don't mind them asking over and over.
So today, I introduced my favoritest book in all the land, A Wrinkle in Time. Some of my kids even remembered it because they wanted me to read it in second grade, but I told them it would be way over their head (and it would be). They are so excited that I get to read it to them now. I am too. I get to read phrases in Latin and French and German (my kids think I'm so chic when I do that). And today, I got to read the opening phrase that is my favorite of all time:
It was a dark and stormy night.
