I'm still not in the groove of writing regularly again. I hope to be soon, but I make no promises. I do leave you with some stories from the front lines.
We are doing some very hard stuff in math. There is some serious gnashing of teeth and tearing of clothing by the children as they are trying to convert cups to pints to quarts and such. So, when one of my little ones (who never finishes anything before it's 3 weeks late) turns in his paper in about 7 minutes, my suspicions arise. I ask him to bring me his paper. I inform him that every answer is wrong. He can't believe they're wrong, but I assure him they are. A few minutes later, another little prince comes to get help from me and we have the following conversation:
kid: "you know why his answers were all wrong?"
me: "yes, he didn't take the time to work out the problems. He just guessed."
kid: "nope. I saw he was looking on my paper so I wrote down a bunch of random answers so he'd get them all wrong."
That is problem-solving at it's finest.
Another example:
We've finished up studying the Alamo, when Texas became a rebublic with the signing of the Treaty of Velasco. Yesterday, we covered the US/Mexican War, which ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo. I am thinking that it is because of this that my boys, during any spare second of free time are shooting little miniscule pieces of paper at each other, and then forming alliances with each other and ending every skirmish with the signing of a Treaty. I seriously have about four treaties floating around my room.
I live in a crazy place. A crazy place indeed.
Things that make my world go round:
When out at recess today, the kids were not allowed to play in the mud (which was everywhere) or with the balls. So, a bunch of normally-soccer-playing boys could not partake in their usual recess endeavors, and decided to play sharks and minnows. Maybe we're not losing our creativity after all.
