Every once in a while, I get to have a conversation in which I think "Huh. I bet people who work in offices don't have these conversations." And I'm pretty sure I'm right.
Last week, I held one such conversation.
Before I share the conversation, let me tell you that as soon as the conversation ended, I looked at the other teacher on recess duty with me and said "What is wrong with me? What possessed me to ask that child why? I knew who he was. I knew that the conversation would go like that. What is wrong with me?"
Here's how it went down:
(The kid is in italics.)
"Can I go to the nurse?"
"Yes. Why?" (There's my mistake right there)
"Well, see, we're playing zombies, and I was trying to separate the zombie from his victim, and I put my arms out like this, but the zombie was still going to get his victim and so I had to stick my leg out. You know...like this...and then when I went to separate them, I lost my balance and hit my head into the pole, and now it huts kinda bad."
"Okay. Go to the nurse."
A few minutes later, I see a kid who seems to be giving CPR to another child that is laying on the ground. Because I'm not a brand-new teacher, and because I've taught this grade of kids before, I am in no way alarmed.
Sure enough, a few moments later the "victim" was up and running from zombies again.
What, you don't think business people have those conversations??? Or the one where I know your nurse said, "ok, ok, skip the zombie stuff and get to the point, what did you hurt???"
