The big test

Yesterday and today were the big tests. Everyone always has something to say about the big test.

I refuse to teach to the test. I teach to life, with the acknowledgement that we have to take this test. So, as the days go by, we learn what we have to learn, and then learn how to apply that to the test.

I have also come to discover that so much emphasis is put on this one test, that even if the kids are prepared for this test, they are so stressed out by it, they’re not going to do their best. And then, when they do get to the test, someone is walking up and down the aisles, breathing down their necks, watching their every move and bubble.

I can’t work under these conditions, and I can’t expect my kids to either. I remember how stressed out I was last year, as it was my first year teaching a “big test” grade.

So this year, we did things a little differently. I quit making a big deal out of the test. I acknowledged that we had to take it, and we talked about it here and there. And as much as I talked about it, I told them that they were ready for it.

This week, I told them to get some sunshine, to relax, and to enjoy themselves. And today, I made sure above all else that their needs were met. I had extra water bottles for those that forgot. They had fun little goody bags on their desks with gum and peppermints and a little “hug” from me.

And as for the walking up and down the aisles, I told them ahead of time that I’d be walking up and down the aisles while they take their test, just to make sure I was there for every little thing that they needed. Not there to make sure they weren’t cheating (my kids wouldn’t dream of cheating). Just to make sure their needs were met.

It's all about how you look at it.
